NCBA Honors Band Meeting May 25, 2009

The Meeting was called to order at 2:00PM by President Richard Holmes. President Holmes welcomed the membership. The minutes were presented by Secretary Blair Smith and approved. The Treasurer’s report was presented by Treasurer Deborah Phillips and approved. At present (before All-State Honors Band expenses) the checking balance is $23,494.49.

All-State Honors Band Report

Dr. Kevin Giaralldi welcomed the NCBA back to UNCG. 9-10 Clinic chairman James Daughtry discussed concert attire for the Sunday rehearsals and reminded the membership to use proper capitalization for registration. Auditions for the 2010 All-State Honors Band will be at East Davidson HS and Brown Middle School on March 6, 2010. Concerns were voiced about moving auditions to a more central location. This is being addressed by the Central District and the Executive Board. The 2010 All-State Honors Band clinic will be at UNC-Chapel Hill on April 30-May 2, 2010. The Clinicians for 2010 are Edna Grace (MS) Dr. Kevin Ghiraldi (9-10) and Brian Balmages (11-12).

All-State Honors Band Auditions Changes

There will be a proposal for several changes to the All-State Honors Band auditions that will be available at your fall district meetings. Changes will include additional scales, scale time limits, sight-reading changes and piccolo audition criteria. The proposal will be presented at the fall meeting and voted on at the spring 2010 meeting. Change MS String Bass Solo from Classic March to Tschaikowsky Melodies by Etling

Percussion Audition Committee- Ariss Golden- Chairman

The Committee met for the first time on Saturday. The committee will look at our auditions process and see if they are meeting the needs of the literature and the students. A report/proposal will be prepared by the fall meeting.

MPA Committee (formerly Concert Band Festival Committee) Mary May - Chairman

This year’s New Music Clinic read 70 pieces in 2 days. The MPA Music Committee is working to change the procedure by which music is placed (and deleted/moved) on the list. This year we used both systems and next year we will only use the new system. The committee will meet in November to go over the pieces that have been submitted. Anyone wishing to add a piece must have your selection to the district representative by June 1, 2009. MPA needs to be changed from festival on all forms. MPA By-Law Proposal was presented and seconded. Discussion on the proposal followed. Membership was assured that there would be availability for feedback from the membership before any music is deleted/moved. MPA By-Laws Proposal order passed.

Marching Band Committee-Josh Potter Chairman

Proposal for MPA in Marching Band recommendation (1^st reading) was presented.

The Deadline for hosting a state event is June 1, 1009. This year the manual will be combined with the judging and procedures manual. In order to be a Chief Judges you must attend a judging meeting. The locations are Wakefield HS and Western Carolina University this summer.

Website - Bill Pendergrass

All-State Honors Band Audition invoices will be sent to the director and not the principal. There are several corrections to the scale audition list. Next year the webmaster needs contact information from the District Chairmen for a statewide contact list. The message board will be deleted from the website.

Other Information

• Convention performance applications are due today.
• 70^th Anniversary ribbons will be available at the 1^st sessions of convention
• Hall of Fame nominations. Due to James Daughtry by July 1^st. Application on Website.
• Discussion followed about keeping dates the same for All-State Honors Band or rotating locations.
• SAT is the 1^st Saturday in May for 2010 (All-State Honors Band Clinic)
