2006 All-State Honors Band Clinic

President David Albert called the General Meeting of the North Carolina Bandmasters Association to order at 2:00 pm.

 

The minutes were approved as posted on the NCBA Website.

The TreasurersÕ report was approved as presented.

 

OLD BUSINESS

 

1)         All-State Honors Band Clinic

 

a)              Clinician Coordinator Report – Ed Rooker

1)              Clinicians have worked hard.

2)              Directors will be pleased with results.

3)              Clinicians have good repour with the students.

4)              Ed will be stepping down as Clinician Coodinator.

 

b)             Concert Festival/Sight-reading – Ed Rooker

Ed gave general comments from across the state about Concert Band Festival Sight-reading.

 

c)              Clinic Chairman Reports – John Lowe, James Daugherty and Jill Bennett

1)              Thanks for getting things in on time.

2)              Send suggestions to improve the experience for the students/directors.

3)              Please make sure students are on time for rehearsals.

 

d)             Dates and Locations:

 

1)              Auditions: March 3, 2007 at East Davidson High and Brown Middle School.

2)              All-State Honors Band Clinic:

2007:   April 27-29 at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

2008:   April 18-20 at the Stevens Center on the campus of NC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem.

e)              Clinicians for 2007

MS: Bryan Doyle, 9/10: Nola Jones, 11/12: Jerry Junkin

 

f)               Audition Procedures Committee – Perry Ditch

 

1)              The committee will continue its work.

2)              Email Perry with concerns so the committee can work on the issue.

 

2)         Concert Band Festival

 

Thanks to Arris Golden, Mary May and Robert Hunter for organizing the New Music Clinic. Thanks for those who came out to play on Friday and Saturday morning.

 

3)         Constitution and Bylaws

 

a)              District Lines:

The following was approved by the membership of the North Carolina Bandmasters Association:

 

ARTICLE V – District Lines

 

*          Section 1. Bands will adhere to the current district map posted on the NCBA Webpage.

*          Section 2. Bands are to participate within their assigned district.

*          Section 3. Requests for district reassignments must be submitted to the NCBA Board in writing prior to the spring meeting.

 

District Membership by counties includes all school systems in those counties unless stated otherwise.

 

Western District: Cherokee County, Clay County, Graham County, Macon County, Swain County, Jackson County, Transylvania County, Haywood County, Henderson County, Buncombe County, Madison County, Yancey County, Polk County, Rutherford County.

 

Northwest District: McDowell County, Mitchell County, Burke County, Avery County, Watauga County, Caldwell County, Ashe County, Alleghany County, Wilkes County, Alexander County, Catawba County: Newton-Conover City Schools, St. Stephens High School, Maiden High School, Bandys High School, H.M. Arndt Middle School, Tuttle Middle School, Riverbend Middle School, Mill Creek Middle School, Jacobs Fork Middle School, Iredell County, Yadkin County, Surry County, Davie County, Stokes County, Forsyth County and Davidson County.

 

South Central District: Cleveland County, Gaston County, Lincoln County, Catawba County: Fred T. Foard High, Bunker Hill High and Hickory City Schools, Iredell County: Mooresville City Schools, Mecklenburg County, Rowan County, Cabarrus County, Stanly County and Union County.

b)             Concert Band Festival

 

The NCBA Board approved the changing of the wording of the festival rules so bands that play for comments only will not receive a rating for sight-reading.

 

4)         Jazz Band – Jerry Lowe

 

a)              Gave comments concerning remaining events and events that occurred earlier in the school year.

b)             Bylaws for the Jazz Section will be presented at the next NCMEA Board meeting.

c)              Clinicians announced for the 2006 All-State Jazz Band Clinic in November.

d)             Send in applications and recordings for convention.

e)              June 17, 2006 is the next Jazz meeting at UNC-G.

 

5)         Marching Band Committee – Mark Beamish

 

a)              Keep checking website for updated information.

b)             Revised the sheets due to feedback.

c)              Creating an adjudication manual for marching band judges.

d)             Will work with the NCBA website so directors can send feedback online after each contest.

e)              There will be 2 training sessions this summer. Information will be on the NCBA website. Must register to attend. These sessions will be for free.

f)               New section/area to pay attention to will be penalties.

g)             May 1 is the deadline to apply to be a NCBA sanction event.

h)             August 1 will be the deadline to send in NCBA sanctioned judges list from each contest.

 

6)         Website – Bill Pendergrass

 

a)              Thanks to: Tom Moncrief for work on the Jazz Page, Ron Payne for work on the Marching Band Page and Eric Grush for posting Honor Band scores.

b)             Will keep working to add to the website.

c)              Honor Band scales are now posted. Please look over to proof. You will need a password to access the PDF files. This only reminds us that the scales currently posted that the scales are not ÒofficialÓ. When the password is no longer need, then the scales are official.  ÒNCBA SCALESÓ is the user name and password.

 

7)         Hall of Fame

 

a)              Nomination forms available.

b)             There was an omission. Hall of Fame criteria states that a person will be retired from teaching to be nominated.

 

NEW BUSINESS

 

1)         Adjudication Guidelines Handbook – Neil Underwood

 

a)     A committee will be formed to create guidelines.

b)    The District Chairman will appoint a person from your district to serve on the committee.

 

2)         Nominations for Clinicians for 2008

 

a)              There was a suggestion that a list be created of those who have been nominated and who have conducted each All-State Honors Band. The list will be researched in the minutes and provided.

b)             The names will be contacted in the following order for each band in 2008:

MS:      Stan Michalski, Erin Cole, JD Anderson, Cheryl Floyd and Andre Feagin.

9/10:    Ron Payne, Linda Moorehouse, Al Corley, Elva Lance and Gary Sousa.

11/12:   Sam Hazo, Mallory Thompson, Richard Clary, Linda Moorehouse, Stephen Pratt and Garwood Whaley.

 

3)         Comments from John Locke

 

a)              Thanks and Welcome to UNC-G.

b)             Introduced the new Associate Director of Bands.

c)              General comments about the 11/12 Clinic Band. A pleasure.

 

4)         Things to Consider

 

a)              Two day Honors Band Clinic.

b)             When hosting a marching band contest: Standardized fee for a contest when paying a judge.

c)              Clinic Coordinator: Use the past President?

d)             Neil Underwood – Will need two people to be on the ballot to run for President-Elect and Secretary.

e)              Concerns about NCMEA Conference:

1)         Performance venue

2)         Clinics

3)         Having our own NCBA Conference

f)               Treasurer concerns:

1)         We have had a few bounced checks for All-State Honors Band.

2)         Consider changing whom we take checks from. Perhaps have a section on the registration form for the audition and clinic chairs to write down name, check amount and check number to help follow up when this happens.

 

5)         Things to Celebrate

 

a)     Ron Payne (from Charlotte) will be retiring at the end of the school year.

b)    Many Directors in the state had children to be born or adopted this past school year!
