General Meeting

2003 NCMEA Fall Conference

Monday, November 10, 2003

 

President Neil Underwood called the General Meeting of the North Carolina Bandmasters Association to order at 3:05 PM.

 

The minutes and treasurerŐs report were read and approved.

 

Thanks were given to Music and Arts for sponsorship of clinics (Dr. Fraschillo and Dr. Lafferty)

 

Old Business

 

1)         Award of Excellence

SC: Tim Hedrick, C: Mark Beamish, SE: Pauline Stemple, E: Mike Pollard, W: Anthony Ammons, NW: Bill Witcher.

2)         NCBA Hall of Fame

Ed Rooker, Caleb Moore, John Miller, Bernard Hirsh, Dr. Wayne Pressley, Ray Babely, Jim Crocker, WW Jacobus and DC Cole.

 

The meeting was paused to allow family members of the Hall of Fame inductees to leave.

3)         Honors Band Solos

a)              Corrections were announced:

 

1)         Middle School: Clarinet, Tenor Sax and Tuba are from Classical Festival Solos Volume 1. The Snare Drum is the same solo as last year. The String Bass Solo is Romaneza by Etling page 24 from Solo Time for Strings Book 3, published by Highland/Etling.

 

2)         9/10: Flute – from 24 Short Concert Pieces pages 24 and 25 – Polonaise and Badinere. Please note these are two movements from a work titled Three Movements from Suite in B minor. String Bass – Barcarolle by Offenbach page 18 from Solo Time for Strings Book 3, published by highland/Etling.

           

3)              Out of range: Oboe, horn and low clarinet – students have the option to take the range down an octave.

b)             A person needs to fix the clarinet solos.

 

4)         Concert Band Festival List

            a)         Correct version sent to district chairs.

            b)         Thanks to Bill Pendergrass for editing the list.

c)              List posted on the Central and South Central websites. Will soon be posted on the NCBA website.

 

5)         All-State Honors Band Clinicians for 2004  

            11/12: David Holsinger

            9/10: Larry Clark

            MS: Donna Tucker

6)         Dates for All-State Honors Band

            Auditions: March 6, 2004

            Registration for Clinic: March 23, 2004

            All-State Honors Band Clinic: April 23-25, 2004

7)         Marching Band Committee Report

            a)         Working meeting in January, 2004

            b)         Mission Statement: APPROVED

 

 

The North Carolina Bandmasters Association, a division of the North Carolina Music Educators Association, officially recognizes and sanctions marching band as a viable and credible performance based ensemble in teaching music in a high school setting. We believe that marching band can be one component of a well-balanced, comprehensive instrumental music program.

 

8)         NCBA Website Report – Bill Pendergrass

            a)         Website address: NCBANDMASTERS.ORG

            b)         Space available to host district sites – if your district does not have a page, see Bill about creating

one.

c)         When sending something to post – send in excel or word. Please do NOT send anything in WORDPERFECT.

9)         Jazz Committee Report – Ted Neely

            a)         All info available on the state website.

            b)         Announced all chairman, forms, dates and locations, etc.

            c)         Thanks to all who helped!

 

10)       Sight-reading Committee – Richard Holmes

            a)         Committee finalizing the proposal.

            b)         Timeline announced – first reading will be at Honors Band 2004.

11)       All-State Honors Band Auditions Committee Report – David Albert

            No formal recommendations given at this time.

12)       All-State Honors Band Instrumentation Proposal

 

10  - Flutes, 2 – Oboes (3 if deemed necessary by clinic chairman), 2 Bassoons, 20 Clarinets, 2 – Alto Clarinets, 4  - Bass Clarinets, 1 – Contra Bass Clarinet, 4 – Alto Saxophones, 2 – Tenor Saxophones, 1 – Baritone Saxophone, 12 – Trumpets, 8 – Horns, 9 – Trombones, 4 – Euphoniums, 6 – Tubas, 4 – Snare/General Percussion, 2 – Mallet Percussion and 1 – Timpani.

 

            Motion and a second to approve proposal – APPROVED

 

New Business

 

1)         Marching Band Committee Score Sheet Proposal

Motion and a second to approve the sheets (for the first reading) with the understanding that the committee will make revisions. -  APPROVED

 

2)         Candidates for Officers

            See Anne Reese if interested in serving or if you wish to nominate a person.

 

3)         Other Business

            John Enloe has a new state bid list that the board recommends its use. See John for a copy.

 

4)         Legislative Update – Earl Taylor

A handout was given to the membership with the highlights. Talking points on issues presented are on the NCMEA website.
