2005 NCMEA Fall Conference

President
David Albert called the General Meeting of the North Carolina Bandmasters
Association to order at 4:36 PM.
President
Albert announced:
1)
Ray
HaneyÕs induction into the Hall of Fame will occur during MondayÕs General
Meeting, as his family was unable to be here today.
2)
Criteria
for the Hall of Fame are available for nominations. Please turn nomination
forms to Phillip Riggs.
3)
The
membership will vote tomorrow on the nominations at the general meeting.
Each
District Chair or designee introduced themselves and their districtÕs
recipient:
Central
District: Arris
Golden, Chairman-Elect, presented the award to Tony Robinson.
Eastern
District: George
Benitz, Chairman-Elect, presented the award to Perry Ditch.
Northwest
District: Barry
Howard, Chairman, presented the award to Bill Winkler.
South
Central District: Blair
Smith, Chairman, presented the award to John Mode.
Southeastern
District: Becky Falor,
Chairman, presented the award to John Lowe.
Western
District: Chris
Ulery, Chairman, presented the award to Will Talley.
President
David Albert congratulated the Award of Excellence recipients and announced the
Marching Band Committee feed back opportunity and a reminder about the session
on Monday.

David Albert called the general meeting of the North Carolina Bandmasters
Association to order at 3:05 PM.
The
minutes were approved as presented.

on the NCBA Website for members to read. Hard copies will not be available at
meetings for the membership. Please read the minutes before each general
meeting.
The
TreasurerÕs report was approved as presented.
1. NCBA
Hall of Fame
a)
Ray
Haney was inducted into the NCBA Hall of Fame. Liz Hasty, Bert Owen and Melanie
Vaught Wholford spoke in Honor of Ray Haney.
b)
Ballots
for the 2006 Hall of Fame Induction were collected and the following names were
nominated.

Looking at War Memorial and UNC. If anyone has
questions/concerns send to Phillip ASAP.

Honors
Band Auditions Committee – Perry Ditch:
1)
Committee
members recognized.
2)
Handout
of the revised procedures available for the membership.
3)
The
following statement was added by the Board which is not on the handout
provided:
Adjudicators will evaluate the studentÕs performance only on the required material. Playing extra octaves will not be credited or penalized.
4)
The
revised procedures were approved by the NCBA Board and will be used unless
there is a motion not to use from the general membership.
5)
There
was not an exception from the membership. The revised procedures will be in
effect for this year All-State Honors Band Auditions.
3. Concert
Band Festival
a)
Updated
Festival list is on the NCBA Website.
b)
Arris
Golden, Mary May and Robert Hunter will head up organizing the new music. If
you wish to have a piece read at the New Music Clinic, email Arris, Mary or
Robert.
4. Jazz
Band –
Jerry Lowe
a)
Please
check the website to contact Jerry if you have questions.
b)
Announced
the first performance of the first All-State Jazz Ensemble.
c)
Please
attend the Jazz Festivals at one of the three locations: Kinston, Hickory or
Asheboro.
5. Marching
Band Committee
– Mark Beamish
a)
Committee
members introduced. New members from the South Central (Keith James) and
Northwest (Danny Fyre) district will be added in January.
b)
Tommy
Smith is the Administrator of the Marching Band Committee.
c)
Twenty-seven
contest across the state.
d)
First
working meeting will be in January to address the concerns/comments from this
fallÕs contests.
6. Website – Bill Pendergrass
a)
Explained
why there was an interruption of service.
b)
An
email list is available for state events.
c)
Contact
Bill if you have any questions.
7. Constitution/Bylaws
Issues
a)
ÒBands
may enter the NC Concert Band Festival for comments only. Sightreading will be
optional for these bands.Ó Motion/2nd – APPROVED
b)
Solo
and Ensemble Fees:
ÒEach District will determine the fees for their Solo
and Ensemble Festival.Ó
The NCBA Board approved this change and will be in effect this year unless there is an exception brought by a member. There was no exception made by a member.
8. District
Line Committee
The
Committee is proposing the following to be voted on at the 2006 Honors Band
General Meeting:
ARTICLE V – District Lines
Section 1. Bands will adhere to the current
district map posted on the NCBA Webpage.
Section 2. Bands are to participate within
their assigned district.
Section 3. Requests for district reassignments must be submitted to
the NCBA Board in writing prior to the spring meeting.
9. Things
to consider:
a)
Middle
and High Schools are encouraged to apply to perform at convention.
b)
Two
NC Bands made BOA Semi-Finals Championships (West Johnston HS and Croatan HS)
c)
Will
continue to have a Sunday session to recognize Award of Excellence and Hall of
Fame recipients.
